ALABASTER – On Thursday January 6, the city of Alabaster received an international award both for its financial reporting and for making the city’s public documents readily available and accessible to the public.
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada specifically awarded the city a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting.
According to Neal Wagner, public relations manager for the City of Alabaster, this is the fourth consecutive year that the city has won this prestigious honor.
“This honor is indicative of the finance ministry’s dedication to transparency and accountability, which greatly benefits the residents of Alabaster,” said Wagner. “We are all incredibly proud of John [Haggard] and its staff for earning this recognition over the past four years.
The report is judged by an impartial panel to meet the program’s high standards and specifically recognizes local, state, or national governments that are dedicated to government transparency and public accountability.
This includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure”, clearly communicating its financial history to citizens, and motivating the public to read the report.
Wagner particularly highlighted the efforts of the city’s finance department and CFO John Haggard to achieve recognition.
The Alabaster Finance Department has compiled the full annual financial report after each of the past fiscal years to clearly recap the city’s financial situation to the community.
Haggard said the award represents a significant achievement by a government and its leadership and that it is the highest form of recognition in government accounting and financial reporting.
“We are very proud to qualify for this GFOA award,” he said. “The award signifies the city’s commitment to providing the best possible financial information to the public.
